The Guide To Poás Volcano National Park

Hola 👋

Visiting Poás Volcano National Park took us three tries. Anna and I had planned to see the crater twice before, and both times the weather shut the park down. Heavy rain and thick clouds meant no visibility and no access. On our third attempt, everything lined up. Clear skies, full visibility into the crater, and one of the coldest mornings we’ve experienced in Costa Rica. It was absolutely worth the wait. This quick guide to Poás Volcano National Park covers how to get there, parking, tickets, and a few ideas for extending your day around San José after your visit. The park itself is a short stop, and this guide will be just as quick. Let’s go!

Finally, a clear day!

Getting to Poás Volcano

Most travelers visit Poás Volcano National Park while staying somewhere in the greater San José area. That can be both a blessing and a curse. The blessing is that you get to explore the energy, dining, and sights of the country’s capital before heading into the mountains. The downside is traffic. Depending on where you’re staying and what time you leave, driving through San José can be slow and unpredictable.

Normally 1.5 hours in average traffic

Tickets and Parking

You’ve arrived at Poás Volcano National Park. Now what? Like many national parks in Costa Rica, Poás operates under the digital ticketing system managed by SINAC, the National System of Conservation Areas. This means you cannot simply show up and purchase a ticket at the entrance. All tickets must be purchased online in advance and are valid for a specific entry time slot.

Get those QR codes ready!

When you arrive at the front gate, there are typically two checkpoints. The first agent will scan your QR code ticket. If you do not have a pre purchased ticket for that day and time, you will be turned around. There is no on site ticket sales option. The second agent collects payment for parking. As of 2026, parking for a standard vehicle is approximately $6. Parking can be paid by cash or credit card, which makes it easy for most travelers.

Park where instructed

After that, you’ll continue driving up the road where attendants will direct you into a designated parking lot and space. From there, it’s a short walk to the main visitor area and crater viewpoint. Advance planning is essential here. Without a ticket, you won’t be entering the park.

Exploring The Poás Volcano

Poás Volcano National Park is one of the most accessible volcano experiences in Costa Rica. It’s suitable for nearly all ages and activity levels, which makes it an easy addition to most itineraries. Once you park, you’ll walk to the main visitor building. Inside you’ll find restrooms, a small café, a gift shop, and a museum that covers the history and science of the volcano. If you enjoy learning about geology and past eruptions, it’s worth spending a few minutes inside before heading to the crater.

The walk up to the mirador

From there, it’s about a 5 to 10 minute paved walk uphill to the main crater viewpoint. It’s short and manageable for most visitors. The only wildcard here is the weather. Poás is known for sudden cloud cover, and it’s not uncommon for the crater to be completely obscured by fog or rain. On rare occasions, the crater viewpoint may close temporarily due to volcanic activity or poor conditions.

Different levels and viewing areas

You can spend as much time at the crater as you’d like before heading back down. For those who want a bit more walking, there is an additional trail that leads to Botos Lagoon and loops back toward the main building. The full walk is about 2.8 kilometers. It includes stairs and some steeper sections, and the altitude can make it feel more challenging than expected, so it’s best suited for visitors with good mobility.

The beautiful Botos Lagoon

Overall, Poás Volcano National Park is a short but rewarding visit. We recommend going in the morning when visibility is typically better and cloud cover is less likely to roll in. If you’re already in the mountains, consider extending your day with a stop at La Paz Waterfall Gardens, located about 30 minutes away. Or better yet, book a full day tour that combines both stops and let someone else handle the driving.

Hiring A Guide

Unlike many other national parks in Costa Rica, hiring a guide at Poás Volcano National Park usually isn’t necessary. The trails are clearly marked, the walk to the crater is short and paved, and the signage throughout the park does a good job explaining the history and geology of the volcano. For most visitors, this is an easy self guided experience.

The only time we recommend visiting with a guide is if Poás is part of a larger multi stop tour. Many full day excursions combine the volcano with places like La Paz Waterfall Gardens or a coffee plantation, and in that case, having transportation and a guide for the entire day can make sense. If Poás is your only stop, you can confidently explore it on your own.

Tips for Visiting

Buy Tickets in Advance

The Poás Volcano National Park is on the SINAC fully-digital QR code system. Make sure to buy your tickets in advanced to guarantee entry. The time slots are limited and they do sell out.

Practice sustainable tourism

The park is a popular attraction that is frequented by tons of people. Minimize your environmental impact by staying on the marked trails and disposing of trash responsibly in the provided bins.

Respect the wildlife

Keep a safe distance from any animals and never feed them.

Book a Full Day Tour

Want to see the most while you’re out exploring? Consider booking a full-day adventure tour that takes you to Poás Volcano National Park, La Paz Waterfall Gardens, and a coffee plantation experience. Check it out here!

Don’t Forget

You can buy almost anything you need in the area, but the prices of some items may surprise you. Sunscreen can cost upwards of $20 USD for a normal size tube at the local market. Some of our don’t forget items are listed below.

Sunscreen – Reapply all day when you’re outside. The sun is no joke here!
Bug Spray – Bugs are minimal in the day but mosquitoes often come out in the evening.
Quick-dry towel – These quick-dry towels are also sand free.
Waterproof hat – I like this floating hat, but any hat with coverage works.
Polarized sunglasses – They don’t have to break the bank. Check out these polarized sunglasses by Blenders.
Waterproof phone case – Great if you’re going to be on the ocean or near water.

Let’s go!

If you’re staying in San José, a visit to Poás Volcano National Park is one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips you can make. The short walk to the crater and well organized entry system make it accessible for nearly every traveler.

While Poás is a quick visit compared to larger parks, it offers a completely different volcanic experience than Arenal Volcano National Park. Where Arenal delivers lava fields, hiking trails, and a full adventure destination, Poás gives you a dramatic, up close look into an active crater with minimal effort.

If you’re building a Costa Rica itinerary that includes volcanoes and time in San José, Poás Volcano National Park fits perfectly into the plan. Just remember to book your tickets in advance and aim for a clear morning.
