Taking the Puntarenas Paquera Ferry

If you’re traveling to Nicoya Peninsula destinations like Paquera, Montezuma, or Playa Tambor, taking the Puntarenas to Paquera Ferry is one of the most scenic and efficient ways to get there. Instead of driving all the way around the Gulf of Nicoya, a trip that can take over five hours, the ferry cuts across the water in just 1 1/2 hours.

Beyond the time savings, the ferry offers a chance to relax and enjoy ocean views. If it’s your first time, the process of boarding, buying tickets, and navigating the terminal can be a little confusing. That’s where this guide comes in. Let’s go!

Our Experience

After wrapping up an amazing stay in Monteverde, we were stoked to take the Puntarenas to Paquera Ferry and continue our road trip up the coast to our condo in Playa Flamingo over the next week. Taking the ferry felt like part of the adventure. It was an opportunity to relax, enjoy the ocean views, and try to catch the bioluminescence in Paquera.

Most of the other information we read before said to get there an hour early. We arrived 1.5 hours early, knowing that things just move slower in Costa Rica, especially since we were bringing a car. Buying tickets online was easy enough, but figuring out where to park and line up was another story. There was no “official” person there to help that early. So, we asked a few different people before getting useful directions, and eventually, we pulled up to the front of the line as the second group there.

Before boarding, we found out that even with our digital tickets, we still had to go to the ticket office and get physical tickets. The office was easy to find (see the photo below) but the line moved slowly. Once we had our tickets, we headed back to the car to wait for boarding. It was a scorching day in March, so we cranked up the AC and cracked open a cold beer. Not a bad way to kill time before setting sail.

Boarding began about 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. It’s a no-nonsense boarding procedure so be prepared to go when instructed. Only the driver can stay in the car, so Anna got out and met me once I parked.

Finally on board, we grabbed seats on the top deck to enjoy the breeze and the views. Not long after, we met a friendly local guy who didn’t speak any English. That didn’t stop us from striking up a conversation with a mix of broken Spanish, hand gestures, and a few beers. He even shared his favorite beaches for body surfing around Montezuma. We still keep in touch from time to time, and that’s the pura vida way. 🤙

Where to Catch the Ferry

The Puntarenas Ferry Terminal is located at the tip of the Puntarenas Peninsula. Follow your directions until you hit Route 17 west. Keep going straight until you reach the ferry dock. There are usually signs for the ferry, but it’s always a good idea to use Google Maps or Waze for real-time directions.

Parking at the Terminal

We didn’t see any paid parking lots in the area. I assume you’ll need to use the available street parking if you intend on doing a day trip from Puntarenas to Paquera. Some nearby hotels may offer day parking, but we’ll update this if we find any paid lots.

Where to Buy Tickets

You can buy ferry tickets at the terminal or online through Naviera Tambor’s website (the ferry operator). During busy seasons (holidays, weekends), it’s best to arrive early or book online to secure your spot.

The Puntarenas to Paquera Ferry runs multiple times per day, but the schedule changes depending on the season. It’s always best to check the latest schedule before your trip. The following times are accurate as of February 2025.

Ticket Prices (One Way)

• Adult Passenger: ₡810 colones (~$1.50 USD)
• Children: ₡485 colones (~$1 USD)
• Motorcycle: ₡3,400 colones (~$6.70 USD)
• Light Vehicle (Car/SUV): ₡11,400 colones (~$22.50 USD)
• Additional passengers in a car: ₡810 colones (~$1.50 USD per person)

Taking a Car on the Ferry

If you’re driving to Paquera, Santa Teresa, Montezuma, or other parts of the Nicoya Peninsula, taking your car on the ferry is a huge time-saver.

Vehicle Boarding Process

• Arrive at the Ferry Port in Puntarenas: Get there at least 60 minutes before departure. We recommend 90 minutes during holidays and peak times.
• Get in the correct vehicle boarding line: There are separate loading lines for the Paquera and Naranjo ferries. Check the signs and make sure you’re in the correct line.
• Go to the ticket office: Even if you bought a ticket online, you must go to the ticket office to receive a physical copy. Have your reservation ready.
• Can you stay in your car? Nope. All passengers must exit the vehicle and go to the seating areas during the crossing. Only the driver can stay in the vehicle during boarding.
• Drive onto the ferry: Crew members will guide you into a parking space below or above the deck. Then, make your way upstairs to the indoor and outdoor seating areas.
• Offloading: Once the ferry docks in Paquera, vehicles disembark quickly, and you’ll be on your way toward your final destination.

Tips for a Smooth Ferry Trip

• ⏰ Arrive early: At least 60 minutes before departure for vehicles, at least 30 minutes for walk-on passengers.
• 🎟 Book online if possible: Avoid long lines and sold out times, especially during holidays.
• 🥤 Bring snacks: Food is available on board, but options are limited.
• 🏝 Enjoy the ride: The ferry is more than transportation. It’s part of the adventure!
